At Klur, we see aging as a sacred element of the human experience. Likewise, we see caring for our skin with nature-inspired formulas as a way to honor our bodies at every age and support the often-underappreciated organ that separates our internal and external worlds.
Though unseen from moment to moment, our cells constantly work to prevent and repair the everyday damages that age skin over time, from solar radiation to daily pollution and particulate matter. This reparative work can be done more effectively if our bodies are well nourished and our skin is replenished with essential fatty acids and lipid-loving antioxidants.
Explore the Formula: Unseasonal Kind
Unseasonal Kind was formulated to keep skin resilient by replenishing squalene, coenzyme Q10 (coQ10), and vitamin E. These are the skin's essential surface lipids that decline over time due to age and environmental exposure.
Using botanical science backed by clinical data, this 100% natural, oil-based formula is made to match and mimic skin's innate chemistry and adapt to your skin's inherent needs. A bio-compatible antioxidant blend of squalene, coQ10, vitamin E, and vitamin C synergistically supports the skin's natural reparative process.
In this formula, a superbly light texture meets superior moisturizing capabilities, and carefully selected nutrient-rich plant extracts harmonize to strengthen and reinforce the skin barrier, energizing fatigued skin and replenishing an environmentally depleted complexion. Every application provides an essential lipid-rich nourishment for optimal skin health, helping slow degradation by preserving and replenishing the skin's vitality.
Skin surface lipids are a complex mixture of sebum and natural oily compounds on the skin's surface. They're an important part of the body's outermost layer of protection from what we call "eco-aging," the everyday factors that cause cellular damage and make skin look aged over time. Skin surface lipid film is unique partly because the lipid squalene is absent in other human tissues, humans are also the only primates with squalene in our sebum.
Within the mix of skin surface lipids, the lipid-loving antioxidants vitamin E and coQ10 work synergically to protect squalene and other lipids from depletion by solar radiation. The body's natural supply of all of these antioxidants – squalene, vitamin E, and coQ10 – increases from childhood to maturity, then decreases as we age.
Whether our skin type is oily or dry, our skin can become depleted of fats and key antioxidants. When this happens, skin may look dull or lackluster and feel rough to the touch.
As our natural lipid supplies wane, we become more vulnerable to this deficiency with age. Because skin surface lipids contain potent antioxidants that make skin more resilient to environmental stressors, if our skin is depleted of lipids, it's more likely to be damaged during encounters with the elements.
Once the lipid-soluble antioxidants in vitamin E and coQ10 are exhausted, free radicals will begin to oxidize squalene and cholesterol, further depleting the skin surface lipids. The reactive by-products penetrate the skin's deeper layers, causing more damage and inflammation. (Although inflammation is a natural part of the body's healing response, chronic inflammation can damage cells.)
Topical application of a combination of vitamin C, coQ10, and squalene has been shown to effectively increase the levels of these lipid-loving antioxidants in the skin's sebum. Unseasonal Kind uses plant-derived oils to mimic the skin's natural supply of protective surface lipids.
Squalane
Our squalane is plant-derived, highly stable, and extremely sustainable. Human sebum comprises roughly 13% squalene, making it an essential component of skin surface lipids. Research has shown that squalene is vital in reducing free radical oxidative damage to the skin. Squalane (with an "a") is a stabilized derivative of squalene. It's a biomimetic lipid with antioxidant properties. Seemingly weightless to the touch, this skin-identical lipid protects, hydrates, and soothes, supporting barrier function and restoring suppleness and flexibility.
Our squalane is sustainably extracted from olives and is non-comedogenic. However, not all squalene comes from plants. It can be derived from animal sources, a practice that is thankfully ending as squalene is increasingly sourced from plants or produced in labs. Klur is committed to using plant-based ingredients that are cruelty-free and vegan.
Found in all living cells, coQ10 is essential to the health of every human tissue and organ. Also called ubiquinone, it's one of the most crucial lipid antioxidants, neutralizing free radicals to prevent damage to proteins, lipids, and DNA. Additionally, it functions as an energy transfer molecule in cellular metabolism.
CoQ10 has been shown to reduce wrinkles and prevent the aging effects of exposure to sunlight, including oxidative DNA damage. Bioactive ubiquinol coQ10 and whole fruit pomegranate extract promote cellular rejuvenation, increase active coQ10 levels (which decline with age), and deliver key antioxidants to combat oxidative stress.
Micro-encapsulated liposomal coQ10 visibly improves the complexion, making it look firmer and more even-toned. In this formula, coQ10 and vitamin E join forces to protect squalene, promote cellular activity, and maximize potency.
These vitamins work synergistically to prevent skin degradation by replenishing antioxidants in the skin, making each more effective than it would be alone.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E improves moisture retention by enhancing ceramide synthesis and is a potent antioxidant, making the complexion more resilient and indirectly supporting collagen synthesis. We use two forms of vitamin E in this formula: water-soluble and fat-soluble. Both forms work to replenish antioxidant-deficient skin, increasing the body's natural defenses against free radicals and premature damage.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is essential for optimal skin health, collagen synthesis, and regulating the balance of collagen and elastin in the skin's lower layer, the dermis. Further, research suggests that skin can't form an effective barrier without vitamin C, indicating the pivotal role this vitamin plays in forming barrier lipids on the skin's outermost layer. Unseasonal Kind incorporates a highly stable form of vitamin C called tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate that converts to L-ascorbic acid after skin absorption. It provides all the incredible skin benefits of L-Ascorbic Acid without pH obstacles, skin irritation, or disrupting the barrier function.
Unseasonal Kind is the only squalene-based facial treatment made to optimize skin health! Every ingredient in this formula is well-considered, has a purpose, and works synergistically to enhance the revitalizing effects of squalane, coQ10, and vitamin E and C.
